Oh man, there is something so special about going back to school. One of my favorite parts of this time of year is filling my kids' backpacks (super cute ones like this one from Amazon), with school supplies that inspire creativity and learning. School supplies, but make it cute.

I have a huge collection of back-to-school books that help build a welcoming, safe school community from day one. I am always adding to my list and Our School is a Family by Shannon Olsen fits perfectly with its inclusive images and language.
My kids go through water bottles like crazy. One gets lost under the seats in the car, another in a kids' cubby. One is constantly living in the Lost and Found at the ballet studio. You get it. So I stock up every fall with reasonably priced, easy-t0-clean water bottles for both kiddos. Loving these whimsical print stainless steel tumblers from Simple Modern. They seem to be the only ones that last in our house!
We have a tradition in our family where Dada gets each kid a new backpack every fall. It is so magical to see their excitement when their favorite guy picks one he knows they will love. And I don't know about you, but we have A LOT to pack when we go to school. Extra clothes, lunch boxes, books.... so we need a bag that can fit everything, but still be stylish. These Simple Modern backpacks are Pottery Barn Kids dupes but for a fraction of the price. Modern prints for girls, boys, and gender neutral.
I never get around to doing this because #workingmom, but I covet the adorable pictures I see every fall on Instagram of perfectly coifed kids holding their cute "First Day of School" pennant flags. Maybe I will get motivated this year and take these photos? Doubtful. In the meantime, one can dream. Found these sweet pastel pennant flags on Amazon in case you are able to memorialize first days in this cute way.
My colleague and I, who teach in higher education, still love to buy ourselves a new notebook and pen for the first week of school. Something about it brings me back to that fresh pencil smell of my childhood. Are these notebooks for the kids, or mom? Might have to steal them...
Grading is so much more fun with colorful pens. And my kids become authors when they have fancy markers too. Ooly is the best for pens, markers, crayons, paints, you name it, to inspire little writers. Starting with these Ooly Glitter Pens from Amazon.
